Background on the Invention
During the summer of 1991 my parents, both who were ~70 years old at the time, were involved in a serious car accident that left my mother in a coma. She emerged from this coma in ~ 4 months and began the difficult task of rehabilitation. It was during this rehabilitation that my father, Mitchell, also a mechanical engineer, noticed the problems that my mother was having with her cane. She kept dropping it and would require someone else to retrieve it for her.
Initial Thoughts and Ideas
It was during one of these visits to my mother in early 1992 that my father suggested to me the concept of a cane that would stand up if dropped or knocked over. He described the concept of self-righting as similar to the bottom weighted punching bags of the 1950's that would stand up if knocked over.
I give my Dad the credit for the general idea of a self-righting cane.
From this initial spark an exciting journey began, which continues today, in the development and commercialization of a revolutionary new product whose sole purpose is to improve the lives of people with canes.
